Douglas Dightman has provided voters with clear stances on key issues by responding to the 2018 Political Courage Test.
| Pro-choice | Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation? | ||
| I believe first trimester abortions should be legal as I do not think it is fair to limit mother?s future opportunities. However, I believe life begins at conception. I believe all individuals seeking an abortion should have counseling to be aware of their options. Minors over the age of 14 ultimately should make their own decision after input from their parents. I do not think federal money should be used to pay for abortions. We need to work harder so the best choice for a young mother is deciding to keep her child or adoption. | |||
| No | In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket? | ||
| No | In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing defense spending? | ||
| Defense spending could be reasonable cut back at times but the primary driver should be to fully fund the defence budget to match the existing threats to the nations security. | |||
| Yes | Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions? | ||
| No | Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth? | ||
| Yes | Do you support lowering corporate taxes as a means of promoting economic growth? | ||
| I do support the federal government adequately funding transportation (highways, waterways, airports) as it is important for effective commerce and promotes economic growth. | |||
| Yes | Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)? | ||
| No | Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions? | ||
| Yes | Do you support the construction of a wall along the Mexican border? | ||
| Yes | Do you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship? | ||
| In general, yes. However, individuals seeking asylum should not be immediately deported but remain out of the general population with their families intact until their case is rapidly and properly adjudicated. | |||
| No | Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes? | ||
| It is currently legal in Washington and I would not support legislation to reverse the people?s decision. However, without knowing more about the effects of legalization, I would not support spreading the use of marijuana for recreational purposes. I think this should be an issue for states not the federal government. | |||
| Yes | Should the United States use military force in order to prevent governments hostile to the U.S. from possessing a nuclear weapon? | ||
| Yes | Do you support increased American intervention in Middle Eastern conflicts beyond air support? | ||
| All life is precious. The United States should intervene in the world in circumstances where people?s lives are being taken for no other reason than religious belief and in other situations where the loss of human life on a grand scale can be prevented by force. The Yazidi genocide should have been prevented by the use of US military force. | |||
| My first priorities would be to focus on long term elimination of federal debt by the passage of a balanced budget amendment, continuing the current level of taxation to stimulate economic growth and ending all programs that primarily act as methods of income redistribution. At the same time immigration reform is a major issue that needs to be worked on simultaneously with the issues above. Lastly, as a physician, I would like to introduce legislation limiting insurance companies from formulary changes which force patients well controlled on a initially covered medication to another medication. |
