New Hampshire State Legislative Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Yes b) Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
c) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
Public funds are not currently used to perform abortions, and our taxes should not be used for that purpose or for any political action done by organizations such as Planned Parenthood. Organizations such as Planned Parenthood offer STD testing and treatment, birth control, well-woman exams, cancer screening and prevention, abortion, hormone therapy, infertility services, and general health care. Planned Parenthood accepts most insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare. They do not deny access to services due to inability to pay. For many women, Planned Parenthood is the only medical care they receive. They deserve funding for these services.

NH Businesses asked for an educated workforce, reliable infrastructure, affordable utilities. They did not ask for tax cuts. The trickle-down economics of business tax cuts is not working. Some of our largest employers do not pay living wages, and their employees must have assistance. Should we legalize marijuana, income from that should support the opioid and mental health crisis, freeing up funding for other budget items.

We need to get money out of politics. Votes should not be bought. We need to stop gerrymandering/partisan redistricting! Let the people pick the politicians, not the politicians pick the people. Voter Suppression: Not allowing the elderly or poor to vote because they don't have a valid drivers license. I aim to have a perfect attendance record at legislative sessions AND committee meetings. Those who fail to show on a regular basis should be penalized. At the very minimum, "Excused" absences should be harder to obtain. Committee meeting attendance should be easily available (i.e. posted on the State's website).

I have mixed thoughts about marijuana. I am concerned about early reports about increased accidents in States like Colorado after they legalized marijuana. Yet, it is a valuable tool for certain health issues, many of which are not covered under our Medical Marijuana bill. We are about to become an island, surrounded by other states with legalization. In a state desperate to raise funds, this is a potential revenue source; but if it is used as such, the target must be identified and funds must not be used for other purposes. I would attend hearings to listen to both sides.

Yes f) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of New Hampshire?
In places where they have required drug testing to receive benefits, they have spent far more on the testing than they have saved. NH does not have a minimum wage; our rate is based on the federal minimum wage. That minimum wage *may* be a living wage in certain areas of the country, but one cannot survive in NH by working for 40 hours per week at minimum wage without benefits such as SNAP (foodstamps) and Medicaid. If one works for 40 hours, they should be able to survive without assistance, unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Yes c) Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from New Hampshire high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
Children should not be punished for the actions of their parents. Per the NH Democratic party's platform, we believe ALL students have the right to a quality education, from early childhood through post-secondary college or technical training.

International scientists from United Nations recently announced that our planet is in trouble; we will not survive if we don't take serious action now. We must reduce our use of fossil fuels and switch to renewable energy. We are making ourselves sick from the chemicals in our water and air, and on our foods. We are experiencing unusual weather patterns, which affect our farms and food. Droughts and contaminated water put us at risk. We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. And we are not leaving them with a very good inheritance.

I believe that we can respect the Second Amendment rights of responsible gun owners and still reduce gun violence and keep our communities safe. I have no intention of taking away guns, but there are commonsense, middle ground solutions to this escalating problem of gun violence, and we all need to work together to find them. I believe we should ban bumpstocks and high-capacity magazines, we should have a waiting period before being allowed to purchase a gun, we should have universal background checks and Red-flag laws, and require permits for concealed carry, with the ability to appeal if denied.

Opioid MISUSE is a big problem. Almost everyone knows someone who has been in trouble because of this. First responders tell me that there are no places for those who almost die to go to when they are ready. By the time a facility is available, they are back to using, or dead. Affects families, employers, employees, first responders. Medicaid expansion helps a number of families fight opioid addiction, mental health issues and other medical treatments. Some time ago, it was reported that over 700 families in Salem were benefitting from Medicaid expansion. We can't take that away from them.

My cousin is a lesbian; I was Matron-of-Honor when she married her partner. We had some serious discussions about her sexual orientation. In 2016, when I first ran for State Rep, I could see that this was going to be an issue. I had the opportunity to attend an art event for the LGBTQ community, with one of the goals was to introduce the straight/cisgender to their world. I listened to their stories. I heard their pain and fears and struggles. I've since become friends with several transgender people. If you don't support them, talk with them. It's real.
Priorities: Opioid/Mental Health. If it can happen in my family, it can happen to anyone. Goal: From prevention to treatment, we need more solutions. We need more treatment facilities. Funding: Should we legalize recreational marijuana, I'd like to see funding from that be used to support the opioid and mental health crisis we are seeing. Environment and climate change. NH ranks at the top of the country for highest rates of breast, prostate and pediatric cancers. Why? Goal: Cleaner water & air. Reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Non-partisan redistricting. It's only fair. Let voters pick politicians, not politicians pick voters.
