What is the Political Courage Test?

Kansas State Legislative Election 2020 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Yes b) Do you support legalizing abortion when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
No c) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
I consider myself pro-life. Some abortion laws proposed are merely pro-birth. I respect all life, but some restrictions placed on females of all ages do not protect their lives. Exceptions must be made for the health/life of a mother, rape (pregnancy without consent) and young girls impregnated by a family member or "friend" of the child. Bill Clinton always talked about abortion as "safe, legal and rare." I prefer "rare, safe and legal." Pro-life extends well beyond birth. If we are truly pro-life, we support programs that help mothers and children after birth.
No a) In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
b) In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Yes c) Do you support lowering the state sales tax on groceries?
d) Do you support the creation of a tax on internet streaming services?
Yes e) Do you support prohibiting the reallocation of funds designated for highway projects?
b. Would depend on the tax bracket. The upper level has received tax relief on the backs of the middle and lower income folks. d. There are many services being taxed now that were not before. I would have to know more about any proposal to tax internet streaming services.
Yes a) Do you support a limit on campaign contributions to state candidates?
Yes b) Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?

No c) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
No d) Do you support the use of private prisons in Kansas?
No e) Do you support mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent drug offenders?
b. It would depend on the age, the crime and the mental capacity of the individual.
Yes a) Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
b) Do you support lowering state income taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
No c) Do you support reducing government regulations on the private sector?
d) Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?

Yes g) Do you support providing financial relief to businesses AND/OR corporations negatively impacted by the state of national emergency for COVID-19?
Yes h) Do you support the legalization of mobile sports betting and wagering?
b. Only if it does not handicap agencies that serve the people, education, transportation, public safety, health care. d. Perhaps when the same is required of legislators g. Yes, if they are required to show that negative impact as it affects employees or services not merely their profits and/or bonuses.
Yes a) Do you support adopting federal education standards in Kansas?
No b) Do you support state funding for charter schools?
Yes c) Do you support increasing teacher salaries AND/OR benefits in Kansas?

Yes b) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
No c) Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom after passing gun safety training?

e) Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
Yes f) Do you support requiring businesses to provide paid medical leave during public health crises, such as COVID-19?
c. If it is affordable. e. While I can understand the religious objections to vaccinations, I also believe that we have to act for the common good. There are diseases that are deadly to some and I am not sure a religious exemption is beneficial to the well being of the majority of the population.
Yes a) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Kansas' anti-discrimination laws?
Yes b) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Kansas' anti-discrimination laws?
Yes c) Do you support greater efforts by Kansas state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
Yes d) Do you support expanding anti-discrimination laws to include hair textures and protective hairstyles?
e) Other or expanded principles:
Medication Expansion is a priority for me. Other priorities are the protection of public education and teachers, the continuation of improvements to our infrastructure and transportation. Food insecurity in my district is very high and I would like to address that. I want to see continued use of resources such as trade schools in training students in their chosen field, college as we know it is not productive for those who have no interest in a degree. We need to support education, infrastructure and quality of life that will encourage Kansans to stay and others to come.
Medicaid Expansion is my top priority. Kansas has lost billions of dollars paid into the federal government which has cost us hospitals, doctors, nurses. Not only do we lose professionals but the economy suffers due to the loss of jobs of people essential to the health care industry. Prevention is the best cure. This expansion would provide an avenue for low wage, underemployed working Kansans to receive wellness visits and preventive care. It would provide some relief to those who tend to slip through the cracks and become reliant on public assistance.
