| MIchigan has undergone a tax burden shift. In reducing corporate and business to taxes to the extent it has, this legislature has unduly burdened the citizens with increased taxes and fees. taxation must be re-worked entirely. Cities and municipalities are being starved of revenue sharing funds. Counties are forced to ask for road funding millages. Trickle-down has not worked and will not work. | |||
| I would not increase higher education costs directly to institutions, but would work for a no-interest loan program for students that have achieved junior standing in college. The college drop-out rate in Michigan is far too high, and it is due to costs. Correction budgets should be reduced when we overhaul the criminal justice code and stop incarcerating for minor drug possession charges and petty crimes. The criminal justice system needs more flexibility and opportunity to use mental health courts and drug courts. | |||

Our courts need the flexibility to assess an appropriate response to violent young offenders. There are individuals that are rehabilitated while in prison, there are others that are not rehabilitated and are dangerous. In the age of violent terrorism, we must give our courts maximum flexibility and elect competent judges. The Federal Government must develop a comprehensive immigration reform plan, and must meet its obligation to enforce. | |||

I do not support direct aid to those facing foreclosure as I believe the banking industry has not been held responsible for its bad behavior. Until the mortgage industry cleans up, we can not bail out bad loans. Minimum wages must be raised, but regional costs of living should be factored into the minimum. | |||

We should have passed legislation that would actually have solved the debt crisis, it was underfunded by this legislature. Charter school test scores prove that charters are not out-performing public schools. In Grand Rapids, 6th grade math tests show the bottom three schools had 0 students proficient - all three schools were charters. Put an immediate cap on charters and start funding public schools adequately. Air-condition the schools and expand the year. Expand early childhood education. | |||

| There are several steps in gun control that would benefit all of us, and are supported by 90% of the public including NRA members. Expand the background checks to cover private sales and gun shows, expand background checks to include recent mental health issues, ban assault weapons. In homes where there is documentation of domestic violence, and a divorce is filed, remove guns for a 90 day period "cooling off", for the safety of women and children. Michiganders are hunters, we expect to own guns. Most of us are responsible gun owners with no fear of background checks. | |||

| I have been a party in a malpractice lawsuit. My children received a settlement on behalf of their father after his death, his lawsuit was still pending at the point of his death. I still do support limits on pain and suffering awards as the medical profession is unduly burdened by malpractice insurance costs. Medical professionals must be allowed to practice to the best of their ability, most are competent and caring. | |||

| Support public education with adequate funding and solve the physical plant issues in MI schools. Return local control of curriculum, testing, and evaluation. Fix the roads, bridges and build public transportation infrastructure while employing Michiganders at a living wage. Use the increase in gas taxes slated for 2017 as a start to funding, implement toll roads. Fix the transparency problem in Lansing.
