What is the Political Courage Test?

Virginia Congressional Election 2016 Political Courage Test

Pro-life Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
I am a lifelong Catholic and am devout to my faith.
No In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing defense spending?
No In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
I believe growing our economy by lowering our corporate tax rate (enabling businesses to expand) and removing job-killing regulations will broaden our tax base and bring the increased revenues we need.
No Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Yes Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
Yes Do you support alternatives to incarceration for certain non-violent offenders such as mandatory counseling or substance abuse treatment?
No Do you support mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent drug offenders?
I believe correctional reform should include substance abuse treatment and is a key platform of my campaign. As Sheriff I have always sought to provide treatment over punishment and it has been a tremendous success.
No Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes Do you support lowering taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes Do you support providing tax incentives to businesses for the purpose of job creation?
No Do you generally support requiring states to adopt federal education standards?
Yes Do you support building the Keystone XL pipeline?
Yes Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
Yes Do you support increased regulations on the hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") industry?
Yes Do you believe that human activity is contributing to climate change?
No Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
I believe that there are steps we need to take to reduce our effect on our environment; however, we must not do anything that will cause further harm on our struggling economy. We must also work with countries like China who are producing significantly greater levels of pollutants to begin reducing their impact.
No Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
Yes Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
I support the repeal only if there is a solution out there to immediately replace it with. In the absence of a solid replacement plan that addresses all of our nations health care and health insurance needs - I feel we should pass commonsense fixes and work to make it better for all Americans.
No Do you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
Yes Do you support same-sex marriage?
I believe in the equal treatment of all committed couples under the law and will only vote for legislation that furthers that goal. My faith teaches me that marriage is a religious sacrament and I hold firmly to that, which is why we need to find a solution that preserves equality and also the religious rights we have in this nation.
Yes Do you support increased American intervention in Iraq and Syria beyond air support?
Yes Should the U.S use military force in order to prevent governments hostile to the United States from possessing a nuclear weapon?
I would only vote for military intervention in the case of a hostile nation developing nuclear weapons after a careful consideration of all the facts and if there is direct indisputable evidence showing the development.
Yes Do you support allowing individuals to divert a portion of their Social Security taxes into personal retirement accounts?

For welfare we need a complete overhaul of our system that protects the promises we have already made, but alters the future promises we make in order to bring these programs back into solvency. I would also greatly increase funding levels for mental health services.
Mental Health/Substance Abuse: reform to address the mental health and substance abuse issues plaguing our nation. Criminal Justice: reform to address the changing issues in the Country. To include reforming the Correctional and sentencing practices to best address the underlying causes. To help restore lives as opposed to storing individuals. Economy: to increase jobs, reduce governmental regulations and make America a pro-business again.
