What is the Political Courage Test?

North Carolina Congressional Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
I support a women's right to make her own reproductive health choices, and I will fight in Congress any attempt to restrict this right. I will support legislation that positively addresses women's health concerns.
Yes In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Yes In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing defense spending?
1. I would support a tax increase on households earning more than $250K per year, and a fair allocation of tax bracketing among the working and middle class. 2. We need to reduce our excessive discretionary defense department spending, while at the same time protecting the Veterans Administration and improving services to veterans.
Yes Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
We need to End Citizens United, and require all campaign contributions to be public knowledge.
Yes Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
No Do you support lowering corporate taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
1. We need to ensure wise federal spending as a means of stimulating the economy with infrastructure investments and investments in education that create jobs that pay a living wage. 2. Lowering corporate tax rates does little to promote economic growth, as large corporations tend to distribute the increased profits rather than reinvest them.
Yes Do you support requiring states to adopt federal education standards?
Yes, but we need have new standards that promote the training for jobs of the future in addition to a broad general education. We need less emphasis on standardized testing so teachers can teach and students can properly learn.
Yes Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
Yes Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
1. Renewable energy is the future and can help reduce the impact of global warming. 2. I support government investment into research and further development of renewable energy to reduce our greenhouse emissions and other pollution outputs.
Yes Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
I support strengthening background checks, increasing investments in mental health care, requiring a background check for all firearm purchases, and banning the sale of military style assault weapons, bump stocks and extended magazines.
No Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
No. But we do need to reinforce the ACA so that more working families have access to quality healthcare in this country.
No Do you support the construction of a wall along the Mexican border?
No Do you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
1. No. The Wall is a foolish waste of taxpayer money. 2. No. Such a requirement is cruel and unrealistic under our current laws. We need comprehensive immigration reform that will protect Dreamers and TPS recipients and offer them a path to citizenship. We also must protect the seasonal migrant farm workers and other immigrant workers on which our country depends.
Yes Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?
We must decriminalize cannabis. We must also expunge the records of individuals who have non-violent possession charges, so they can go forward with their lives.
No Should the United States use military force in order to prevent governments hostile to the U.S. from possessing a nuclear weapon?
No Do you support increased American intervention in Middle Eastern conflicts beyond air support?
1. We should always pursue negotiation and non-violent means of resolving international disputes. The use of military force should be a last resort and only with the approval of Congress, after it is carefully considered and debated. 2. We must be very careful when entering into conflicts, first ensuring we have the correct facts. We spent $2 trillion dollars in Iraq based upon incorrect facts, while at the same time contributing to a ballooning deficit. We should be providing humanitarian aid, not just sending the military forces into every conflict, especially in the Middle East.
My campaign is a campaign to represent working people. My priorities are: 1. Greater Investment in Infrastructure to grow the economy. 2. Job training, creating jobs that pay a livable wage, and raising the minimum wage. 3. Ensuring health care for everyone through Medicare as an option for all.
