What is the Political Courage Test?

Missouri Congressional Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Supporting a womans right to make her own decisions with regard to how to deal with an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy does not mean a person is in favor of abortion. I believe that we should do everything we can to minimize the number of abortions - in particular by providing sex education and access to contraceptives. However, when a woman is faced with an unwanted pregnancy, the decision regarding whether or not to have an abortion is her decision. She should not be denied the freedom to make her own decision by the government.
Yes In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Yes In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing defense spending?
I support tax relief for working-class and middle-class taxpayers. I believe capital gains should be taxed at the same rate as ordinary income. I believe corporations and the wealthy should pay their fair share. The net result would be an increase in taxes for taxpayers whose earnings include capital gains. I believe defense spending could be reduced significantly and we would still have the strongest military in the world. President Eisenhower warned us of the dangers of the military-industrial complex. We have failed to heed his warning. We should belatedly take his warning seriously.
Yes Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
I favor prohibiting corporations from spending any corporate funds on political activity, directly or indirectly. I believe any spending done by unions should be from political action committees funded with voluntary contributions from union members.
Yes Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
No Do you support lowering corporate taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes. I am in favor of the federal government guaranteeing every worker a socially-useful job that pays enough to raise a family and live in dignity. (As called for in the Democratic Party platform.) I believe that as long as the Supreme Court goes on pretending that corporations are people, they should pay the same tax rate as people. (Ordinary people, not hedge fund managers.)
No Do you support requiring states to adopt federal education standards?
I favor federal funding for schools to insure that every student, "no matter who they are, how much their families earn, or where they live" has "access to a high-quality education, from preschool through high school and beyond." (The quotes are from the Democratic Party platform.) I believe that public schools should be governed individually and democratically, with a primary mission of teaching students how to learn, thus nurturing, rather than damaging or diminishing our natural love of learning. I believe that students should be free to direct their own learning.
Yes Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
Yes Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
I believe we should move to clean, renewable energy as rapidly as possible. I agree with the Democratic Party platform, which says in part: "Climate change poses a real and urgent threat to our economy, our national security, and our childrens health and futures. We believe America must be running entirely on clean energy by mid-century. We cannot leave our children a planet that has been profoundly damaged."
Yes Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
Those among us who are worried that the right to own a gun is under attack need to understand a simple fact - no one is coming for your guns. There is no legislation under consideration at any level of government that would lead to the confiscation of guns from law-abiding citizens. No Democratic candidate anywhere is advocating taking guns from law-abiding citizens. We do need to enact common sense regulations that limit the ability of unstable individuals, people with a history of violent behavior, and suspected terrorists, to purchase assault rifles and unlimited amounts of ammunition.
Yes Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
I believe the Affordable Care Act should be replaced with a true single-payer system. As a compromise measure, I support the addition of a public option to the Affordable Care Act, to make health care truly affordable.
No Do you support the construction of a wall along the Mexican border?
No Do you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
I believe that we should secure our borders, but have a very generous immigration system that welcomes law-abiding people who come seeking freedom and economic opportunity. I believe refugees fleeing violence in their home countries should be treated with dignity and respect.
Yes Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?
No Should the United States use military force in order to prevent governments hostile to the U.S. from possessing a nuclear weapon?
No Do you support increased American intervention in Middle Eastern conflicts beyond air support?
(1) Meaningful action to address the climate crisis, providing true full employment in the process with public sector jobs focused on moving us to clean energy, transitioning to electric cars and mass transit, increasing energy efficiency, and reforestation, and with public sector workers paid enough to raise a family and live in dignity. (2) Truly affordable, universal health care. (3) Federally funded and locally controlled public schools to provide educational opportunities for lifelong learning to every member of our society.
