We need an alternative to cars, if only so that drunk drivers can have their licenses suspended and make it stick. As long as people need cars to get to work, there will be unlicensed drivers on the road. The real economic issue is discretionary income. People should be able to choose whether to operate a car or live without and take the bus. Then people on minimum wage would have discretionary income. | |||

| Get rid of gerrymandering. Restore voters' right to fill vacancies in the legislature. Build sidewalks on both sides of every street, with benches and bus shelters. Turn the abandoned railroad right of ways into bikepaths. And create a public transit system that goes everywhere and can be used by everyone. This program can be financed by folding the school bus system, which costs $1 billion a year, into New Jersey Transit. Other savings from a usable public transit system would come from scrapping the specialized transit systems for the elderly and handicapped. One nation, one public transit system. |
