Reason for Seeking Public Office:

My goal is to serve the people of the 70th Assembly District in a manner that considers the needs of the people who reside, work, and do business in the 70th. I chose to run as a candidate of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, because I believe the Democratic Party more closely represents my views concerning government's obligation to serve the people. My reasons for running are numerous. I do not believe that one party rule has served our state well. Rather than encouraging fruitful discussions of the issues before us, I have witnessed the arrogance of a leadership in our current government that seemingly appears to believe that it can ignore important portions of our state's population. In spite of significant opposition, they have enacted laws and policies, many times in the middle of the night, that have not served our state well. They have cut funding to our public schools, and have cut funding to our state university system. They have enacted rules, causing many of our university professors and public school teachers to seek employment at other colleges and universities, or in other states. They have refused to accept federals funds for the Affordable Care Act, causing higher than necessary costs to our citizens for health care. They refused funds for a high speed rail that might have spurred economic growth that would have more than made up for the cost of the system to the state. Infrastructure, to include roads, bridges, sewers, and schools continue to require more maintenance than the state has provided, and it seems that at every opportunity, as local governments attempt to provide solutions, the state restricts their ability to do so. And the list goes on and on. We have seen huge amounts of outside money bend the system to their will, and bring down decades and decades of honest efforts by previous administrations, both Democrat and Republican, that created a world class university system, a nation-leading public education system, labor laws that helped create a high standard of living for all who chose to live, work and raise families in our beautiful state, and state parks and natural resources that draw hundreds of thousands of tourists to our fine state each year. To make matters worse, through their policies, they have done nothing to encourage our most promising young people to remain in their home state and be productive citizens.

We have now seen almost six years of the Walker administration and Republican leadership in the legislature, that proceeds from the top down. I believe that when it comes to representing the people, those who are elected by the people have an obligation to listen to their public, and, with the consent of the governed, help formulate solutions to the problems we face. We all know that Wisconsin has a long tradition of progressive politics that has conserved our natural resources, relied on high quality public education, provided for the well-being of our citizens, encouraged the development of a strong small business environment, and managed to accomplish all of this with respect for the individual. With the help of the voters of the 70th Assembly District, our state can begin the process of developing a strong economy that helps all of our citizens prosper, return our schools to the high levels of performance they were once noted for, guarantee the protection of our natural resource for our children and grandchildren, and protect the rights of the individual.
