Priority Issues:

I am running for the House of Representatives to continue my service to Essex. It is my view that support for our small businesses, the backbone of any strong community, has been missing. As a small business partner since 1991, I have been asked to testify before the Legislature on a number of issues that impact Vermont's small businesses. Many legislators have told me that I bring clarity to issues and an important small business perspective. I am running to bring that clarity, perspective and 25 years experience running a small business to Montpelier where it will do the most good for the families and businesses of Essex.

I have three issues I will champion if I am chosen to represent Essex Junction:

* I will fight to craft balanced budgets that keep spending growth within our revenue growth. We cannot continue to spend 2%-3% above our ability to grow the economy. For the last six years the Legislature has passed a "balanced budget" in May only to call committees back later that summer because revenue projections have declined or spending projections have increased. This practice is unsustainable, a waste of time and money and cannot continue. I will fight to keep spending in check and set aside money to fund unforeseen increases in expenses.

* I will work to pass legislation that encourages and supports businesses' use of Vermont's wealth of independent contractors and sole proprietors. This growing pool of workforce talent needs the ability to grow their businesses without the threat of audit penalties in unemployment taxes and back workers' compensation premiums. Businesses need the ability to hire these independent contractors to help them accept and fulfill larger contracts that require people above their current staffing levels.

* I will fight to ensure Vermont's children are protected by a strong and effective Department of Children and Families. This means we must staff and fund this Department appropriately so that caseloads allow our hardworking staff to follow each and every child and family and no one falls between the cracks. We must continue to fight the opiate addiction crisis that is fracturing our families. I will work to ensure we allocate our budget resources where they will do the most good to help these families.

I believe open, transparent and accessible government is a must and that listening is the best way to understand people's concerns and meet their needs. I will always be available and approachable and know that with your help, we will continue to make Essex Junction a strong, vibrant and welcoming community. Thank you and I look forward to speaking with you soon.
