He was named "Honor Graduate" of both his Basic Combat Training Course and his Advanced Individual Training Course as a Chaparral Missile Air Defense Artilleryman. During his enlistment he also earned the distinction of "Honor Graduate" in each of his following courses: Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Non-commissioned Officers Course, Advanced Non-commissioned Officer's Course, Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Warfare Course, the Army Recruiters Course and the Recruiting Station Commander's Course. He also graduated from the Jungle Warfare Expert course in Panama. He qualified as an "Expert" marksman on multiple weapon systems including Pistol, Rifle, Machinegun, Missile, and Mortar and was awarded four Army Commendation Medals along with numerous other awards for merit. He was selected as Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year at Ft. Irwin, California.
