Favorite President and Why:
George Washington is my favorite President because he helped charter a path for the great country we are now blessed to be part of.
First Job:
Milking cows on a local farm
Hobbies or Special Talents:
My hobbies include reading, writing, baking and being in nature. I love to curl up with a good book on a rainy day, or go hiking in the beautiful bluffs in southeast Minnesota when the weather is nice. Also, I enjoying fishing and hunting with my family.
Priority Issues:
Representation:
Southeast Minnesota has always been a home to me. I take great interest in hearing what each student has to say on campus, and I will take that same interest and hear out what residents in district 28A have to say. I want to represent the all people. As a resident assistant at Winona State University I have been trained for conflict resolution for the past 3 years. If someone has a difference of opinion I do not want to turn them away. I want to work with them and see if there is a solution that both of us can agree on. I want to make sure each resident feels they are being heard and that they are receiving answers to their questions. I can?t promise to have the answers they want to hear. I fear that is the problem with many representatives today. They say what they think voters want to hear and not the truth. I want to be honest with the residents of district 28A and will strive for that always.
Higher Education:
The average college student in Minnesota graduates with $30,000 of debt. Tuition has increased 763% since 1980. This debt is crippling for students and our economy. I will work towards a long-term solution. We need to think outside of the typical patterns of cash flow into or out of the education system. As students we have been told if we get a degree we will get a job yet unemployment for adults under the age of 25 is about 16%. That combined with the statistic from the Bureau of Labor for 2013 reported that 48% of college graduates from a four year university didn?t need their degree for the job they currently have tells a story. The story of a failed system. We need find a solution that provides students with opportunities for success and not one of unemployment and debt.
Taxing and Spending:
The money you make should be your own to spend and not the government?s. The government has had their hand in our pockets for far too long. I will work towards making sure the money you work hard to earn stays in your hands. I also want to make sure that the money the government is taking isn?t being spent wastefully. The government doesn?t have the right to make winners and losers. We need to make sure that if we are spending money it is going towards items that create equal opportunities.
Small Businesses and Agriculture:
Small businesses and agriculture are at the heart of the US. They are what keep our economy running. We need to make sure the government isn't getting in the way of these groups. If regulation is created we need to make sure it only encourages competition and growth and isn't inconsistent and picks favorites. Minnesota is a state that always strives to do better and we can do better than heavy regulation that hinders business owners and farmers. We need to create an environment that encourages residents of Minnesota to start the farm they have dreamed of or the business they have envisioned for years.
