Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that establishes statewide online training for K-12 pupil suicide prevention in California.

Highlights:

• Requires the development of a free online training program focused on the prevention of pupil suicide in grades 7-12, with the following requirements (Sec. 1):

• It must be evidenced based, trauma informed, and culturally competent;

• It must be consistent with the model pupil suicide prevention policy developed by the Department of Public Health;

• It must address the needs of high-risk groups, as specified; and

• It may assess trainee knowledge before and after training is provided in order to measure training outcomes.

• Defines “Local Agency” as a county office of education, school district, state special school, or charter school that serves pupils in kindergarten or in any of grades 1 to 12 (Sec. 2).

• Requires Local Agencies to report on or before June 30, 2027, and June 30 annually thereafter, the number of pupils screened, and which screening instruments were used, for the reporting year, to the department (Sec. 2).

• Requires Local Agencies to ensure data is reported in a de-identified format that protects pupil privacy consistent with state and federal data privacy laws (Sec. 2).

• Specifies that this act takes effect immediately upon being signed into law (Sec. 3).
