Vote to pass a bill that establishes requirements for a statewide mathematics instruction framework in New Mexico.

Highlights:

• Establishes the Mathematics and Science Bureau in the Public Education Department to administer the provisions of this Act, develop a strategic plan for mathematics and science education, and assist and monitor schools’ goals for improving mathematics and science education in alignment with the plan (Sec. 4).

• Requires the Department and the Bureau to develop a mathematics instructional leadership framework by December 31, 2026, that defines the roles and responsibilities of instructional leaders in supporting mathematics instruction (Sec. 5).

• Requires each school district and charter school, beginning in the 2027-2028 school year, to develop and implement elementary and secondary mathematics professional learning plans for mathematics teachers (Sec. 5).

• Requires each school district and charter school, beginning in the 2027-2028 school year, to administer a mathematics screening test to students in kindergarten through third grade (Sec. 6).

• Requires schools to notify parents of any student who is identified as having a mathematics difficulty, and implement an improvement plan (Sec. 6).
