Title: Establishes Requirements for a Statewide Mathematics Instruction Framework
Vote to pass a bill that establishes requirements for a statewide mathematics instruction framework in New Mexico.
Establishes the Mathematics and Science Bureau in the Public Education Department to administer the provisions of this Act, develop a strategic plan for mathematics and science education, and assist and monitor schools’ goals for improving mathematics and science education in alignment with the plan (Sec. 4).
Requires the Department and the Bureau to develop a mathematics instructional leadership framework by December 31, 2026, that defines the roles and responsibilities of instructional leaders in supporting mathematics instruction (Sec. 5).
Requires each school district and charter school, beginning in the 2027-2028 school year, to develop and implement elementary and secondary mathematics professional learning plans for mathematics teachers (Sec. 5).
Requires each school district and charter school, beginning in the 2027-2028 school year, to administer a mathematics screening test to students in kindergarten through third grade (Sec. 6).
Requires schools to notify parents of any student who is identified as having a mathematics difficulty, and implement an improvement plan (Sec. 6).
