Vote to pass a bill that requires voters to provide proof of citizenship when registering to vote in South Dakota.

Highlights:

• Specifies the following conditions for an individual to register as a voter of the state (Sec. 1):

• They are a citizen of the United States and provides sufficient evidence; 

• They are a resident of the precinct where they are registering; 

• They are at least 18 years of age on or before the next election; and

• They are not disqualified from voting. 

• Requires a county auditor to designate an individual as a federal voter if they fail to provide a residential address or documentation demonstrating they are a U.S. citizen (Sec. 2). 

• Requires the county auditor to list only the names of the candidates for U.S. senator, U.S. representative, and president and vice president of the United States on ballots for federal voters (Sec. 2). 

• Requires all individuals to provide documentation alongside their application to demonstrate that they are a U.S. citizen, and present the following (Sec. 3): 

• A valid driver license or nondriver identification card from any state or territory of the U.S.; 

• A tribal identification card; or

• A legible photocopy of their birth certificate, pages of their passport showing their passport number, their certificate of naturalization, or other forms of acceptable documentary evidence of citizenship. 

• Authorizes an individual to vote at an election in a proposed hospital district if the individual is registered as a voter and is a resident of the proposed hospital district (Sec. 4). 

• Specifies that this Act takes effect immediately after passage (Sec. 7).
