Title: Prohibits Forced Sterilization of Individuals With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Vote to pass a bill that prohibits the forced sterilization of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Colorado.

Highlights:

  • Prohibits any individual with an intellectual and developmental disability from being sterilized against their will, unless all of the following conditions apply (Sec. 1):

    • The individual lacks decision-making capacity;

    • There is an imminent threat to the life or health of the individual; and

    • The decision is made in accordance with established processes, requirements, limitations, or a court order.

  • Prohibits the removal of any individual’s organs for transplantation under any circumstances if the individual implicitly or expressly objects to the procedure (Sec. 2).

  • Specifies that this Act takes effect 90 days after the adjournment of the legislature, unless a referendum petition is filed (Sec. 4).
