Title: Prohibits the Import, Sale, and Possession of Assault Firearms

Vote to pass a bill that prohibits the import, sale, and possession of assault style firearms in Virginia.

Highlights:

  • Defines an “assault firearm” as any of the following (Sec. 1):

    • A semi-automatic center-fire rifle with a fixed magazine capacity in excess of 15 rounds;

    • A semi-automatic center-fire rifle that can accept a detachable magazine, and has one or more of the following;

      • A collapsible stock;

      • A thumbhole stock or pistol grip;

      • A second handgrip or protruding grip;

      • A grenade launcher; or

      • A threaded barrel capable of accepting various attachments;

    • A semi-automatic shotgun that has one or more of the characteristics listed above;

    • A shotgun with a revolving cylinder;

    • A firearm that has the capacity to accept a belt ammunition feeding device; or

    • A firearm that has been modified to fit any of the descriptions above.

  • Classifies the import, sale, manufacture, purchase, or transfer of an assault firearm or large capacity ammunition feeding device as a Class 1 misdemeanor (Sec. 1).

  • Exempts government officers, agents, employees, and members of the Armed Forces of the United States from the prohibition of this section (Sec. 1).

  • Prohibits any individual who has been convicted of a violation of this section from purchasing any firearm for a period of three years following conviction (Sec. 1).

  • Exempts antique firearms, firearms rendered permanently inoperable, and firearms manually operated by bolt, pump, lever, or slide action from the prohibition of this section (Sec. 1).
