Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to amend and pass a bill that requires employers or contractors engaged in work for a public body to submit payroll records to the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

Highlights:

• Exempts a contractor who performs work for a public body and who is not otherwise required to register with the Department of Labor and Workforce Development from the definition of contractor as it pertains to that registration requirement (Sec. 1).

• Defines “work for a public body” as construction, reconstruction, demolition, alteration, custom fabrication, duct cleaning, repair work, or maintenance work that is done under contract and paid for in whole or in part out of the funds of a public body, or is done on the property of a public body (Sec. 1).

• Authorizes the Commissioner of Labor and Workforce Development to require any employer or contractor engaged in work for a public body to file any or all records that pertain to wages and hours worked with the commissioner within 10 days of request (Sec. 3).

• Specifies that this Act takes effect one year after passage, and authorizes the Commissioner of Labor and Workforce Development to take administrative action in advance for implementation (Sec. 4).
