Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that requires the display of certain documents of historical significance in public schools in Ohio.

Highlights:

• Requires the board of education of each school district in the state to select to display at least four of the following documents in each history or social studies classroom grades four through twelve (Sec. 1):

• The Mayflower Compact;

• The Declaration of Independence;

• The Northwest Ordinance;

• The mottoes of the United States and Ohio;

• The Ten Commandments;

• The Magna Carta;

• The Bill of Rights;

• The United States Constitution; or

• The Articles of Confederation.

• Authorizes boards of education to select documents from the list above to be displayed in each school building or classroom, and to erect a monument or other marker on school grounds with those documents (Sec. 1).

• Requires boards of education to ensure that the documents displayed are easily visible and include a description of their historical importance (Sec. 1).

• Requires boards of education to determine the amount of funds necessary to comply with this section and either accept the total amount of donated funds or accept donated displays (Sec. 1).

• Specifies that this section does not apply to a school district that does not receive donated funds or displays, and that they are not required to accept donations that contain limitations or conditions of acceptance (Sec. 1).
