Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that requires petitioners in Illinois to inform signers of the purpose of the petition by either reading the summary to them or allowing the signer to read the summary.

Highlights:

• Requires the circulator of a petition to provide both of the following choices to the individual who is signing the petition (Sec. 482g):

• Have the circulator indicate where the summary of the purpose of the proposed amendment or question proposed, as submitted to or as approved by the Board of State Canvassers, is located on the petition and give that individual the opportunity to read the summary; and 

• Have the calculator read to the individual the summary of the purpose of the proposed amendment or question proposed, as submitted to or as approved by the Board of State Canvassers. 

• Specifies that if the circulator fails to comply with these requirements, the sponsor of that petition is subject to a civil fine of no more than $1500, or $50 for each violation, whichever is greater (Sec. 482g).
