Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that prohibits discriminatory practices by real estate appraisers in New York.

Highlights:

• Prohibits real estate appraisals to discrimination against individuals based on their race, creed, color, national origin, citizenship, immigration status, sexual origin, gender identity, military status, sex, age, disability, marital states, lawful source of income, status as a victim of domestic violence, or family status to either the current occupants or future occupants of the property (Sec. 1).

• Specifies that a fine of no more than $2,000 will be imposed if found in violation of the act, along with suspension/ revocation of their certificates/ license (Sec. 1).

• Appropriates 50% of the fines to be added to the anti-discrimination in housing fund (Sec. 1)

• Specifies that before any disciplinary action is taken, individuals under investigation will be notified in writing at least 20 days before a hearing date with the opportunity to be heard in person or by counsel (Sec. 1).

• Specifies that the anti-discrimination in housing funds can be used for programs assisting with fair housing, fair housing testing, outreach and education on fair housing protections, investigating fair housing allegations and complaints, and addressing discrimination in appraisals (Sec. 1).
