Vote to pass a bill which requires hospitals in Ohio to provide overdose reversal drugs.

Highlights:

• Requires hospitals to provide opioid-use-related patients with an overdose reversal drug upon discharge from the emergency department (Sec. 1).

• Exempts hospitals from the requirement described above if any of the following is the case (Sec. 1):

• The patient’s treating practitioner has determined that providing the drug is not appropriate;

• The patient’s treating practitioner has confirmed that the patient possesses an overdose reversal drug;

• The hospital has not received a supply of overdose reversal drugs from any source; or

• The patient refuses to accept the overdose reversal drug.

• Requires hospitals providing an overdose reversal drug to include directions for the drug’s use, information about medications for opioid use disorder, harm reduction strategies, and available services such as treatment and peer counseling (Sec. 1).

• Requires hospitals to provide information about medications for opioid use disorder, harm reduction strategies, and available services such as treatment and peer counseling to patients who refuse to accept an overdose reversal drug (Sec. 1).

• Authorizes hospitals to seek reimbursement for the cost of an overdose reversal drug in the case of a patient who is covered by a health benefit plan or the medicaid program, if the plan covers the drug (Sec. 1).

• Specifies that this Act does not prohibit a hospital from providing an overdose reversal drug at no cost to a patient from a supply purchased by the hospital (Sec. 1).

• Requires the Department of Behavioral Health to provide overdose reversal drugs to hospitals to be provided to patients as described in this Section (Sec. 1).
