Title: Expands Protections for Consumer Data and Requires Information Sharing About Data Use

Vote to pass a bill that expands protections for consumer data and requires information sharing about data use in Pennsylvania.

Highlights:

  • Expands the definition of “sensitive information” to include the following (Sec. 2):

    • Social security number;

    • Driver’s license number or a state identification card number; and

    • Financial account number plus any security code or password that would permit access to the account.

  • Establishes consumers’ right to do each of the following regarding their data (Sec. 3):

    • Confirm whether or not a controller is processing or accessing their data, unless the access would require the controller to reveal a trade secret;

    • Correct inaccuracies in their personal data;

    • Delete personal data provided by or about themselves;

    • Obtain a copy of their personal data; and

    • Opt out of the processing of their personal data for targeted advertising or the sale of personal data.

  • Requires a controller of personal data to comply with a request by a consumer to exercise their rights under this Section (Sec. 3).

  • Specifies that this Act takes effect one year after passage (Sec. 12).
