Vote to pass a bill that establishes the New Jersey-Haiti Commission to advise the Governor and Legislature on ways to improve the economic and cultural links between the state and Haiti.

Highlights:

• Establishes the New Jersey-Haiti Commission in the Department of State to advise the Governor and Legislature on ways to improve economic and cultural links between the state and Haiti and on steps that may be taken to address the economic challenges of the state’s Haitian-American community (Sec. 2).

• Specifies that the commission shall consist of 13 members, including the Secretary of State or a designee, and 12 members of the public, appointed by the Governor, representing a variety of professional sectors, including non-profit organizations serving the Haitian community (Sec. 2).

• Requires the commission to (Sec. 3):

• Conduct a comprehensive review of historical ties between New Jersey and Haiti;

• Collect and analyze quantitative data to assess the current state of affairs in the Haitian-American community and how the state can assist it;

• Analyze ways for the state to establish a strong partnership and cooperation with Haiti;

• Identify areas for economic collaboration and partnership between New Jersey and Haiti; and

• Recommend policy initiatives, legislation, and programs to support economic development efforts in the Haitian-American community.

• Specifies that this Act takes effect immediately upon passage (Sec. 4).
