Title: Establishes Requirements Related to Paid Sick Time

Vote to concur with House amendments and pass a bill that establishes requirements related to paid sick time in California.

Highlights:

  • Requires employers to provide a stand-alone written notice to each current employee about specified workers’ rights (Sec. 1).

  • Requires that each notice shall contain a description of workers’ rights in the following areas (Sec. 1): 

    • The right to workers’ compensation benefits and contact information for the Division of Workers’ Compensation;

    • The right to notice of inspection by immigration agencies; 

    • Protection against unfair immigration-related practices; 

    • The right to organize in a union; and

    • Constitutional rights when interacting with law enforcement at the workplace.

  • Requires the Labor Commissioner to develop a template notice for employers (Sec. 1).

  • Requires the Labor Commissioner to produce a video advising employees of their rights and requirements (Sec. 1).  

  • Requires the employer to notify the emergency contact of an employee if that employee is arrested or detained in the worksite (Sec. 1).

  • Prohibits employers from discriminating or retaliating against employees exercising their rights specified under this bill (Sec. 1). 

  • Specifies that an employer found to be in violation of this bill may be fined up to $500 per employee for each violation (Sec. 1). 

  • Specifies that if an employer is found to be in violation of the emergency contact provision, they may be fined up to $500 per employee each day the violation occurs, up to a maximum of $10,000 per employee (Sec. 1).
