Vote to pass a bill that requires the Department of Education and the Department of Natural Resources to make a model program of firearm safety instruction for grades 6-12 in Michigan.

Highlights:

• Requires the Department of Education, in consultation with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), to adopt and provide to schools a model program of firearm safety instruction for students in grades 6-12 (Sec. 1163a).

• Requires that the program comply with the requirements of the existing safe firearm handling course provided by the DNR, and be taught by an individual certified as a hunter education instructor by the DNR (Sec. 1163a).

• Requires that the program includes the following topics (Sec. 1163a):

• Proper usage and handling of firearms;

• Safe cleaning and maintenance of firearms;

• Different types of firearms; and

• Safe hunting practices.

• Prohibits firearms or ammunition from being brought into a school building as part of the firearm safety instruction (Sec. 1163a).

• Authorizes school boards to provide the firearm safety instruction as an extracurricular class for students in grades 6-12, or as part of an existing course (Sec. 1163a).

• Requires schools to excuse a student from the firearm safety instruction upon request by the student or their parent/legal guardian (Sec. 1163a).

• Specifies that a student who completes the firearm safety instruction is considered to have completed the hunter safety course required to obtain a hunting license (Sec. 1163a).
