Title: Prohibits Sanctuary City Policies and Requires Local-Federal Immigration Enforcement Cooperation
Vote to pass a bill that prohibits counties from adopting or enforcing sanctuary city policies that restrict local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities in Michigan.
Prohibits counties from enacting or enforcing any laws or policies that stop local officials from working with federal immigration officials regarding the immigration status of individuals in the state (Sec. 5).
Requires counties to change any current rules that do not comply with the new act within 60 days of the enacted date (Sec. 7).
Authorizes residents, if a county enforces a law that does not comply with the new policy, to either sue their county in court or file a complaint with the Attorney General (Sec. 9).
Authorizes the Attorney General to investigate complaints and sue counties, if necessary, to enforce the law. Counties must cooperate with the investigation (Sec. 11).
Requires courts to block unlawful local policies, order their repeal, and authorizes courts to award damages and legal fees to anyone who successfully challenges a violation (Sec. 13).
