Vote to concur with Senate amendments and pass a bill that establishes requirements for public school districts with nonpublic school students wishing to participate in extracurricular athletics in Iowa.

Highlights:

• Defines the term “organization” to include corporations, associations, or organizations of which the following all apply (Sec. 1):

• Sponsoring or administering of extracurricular, interscholastic athletic contests or competitions;

• Monitoring of student participation in extracurricular, interscholastic athletic competitions or contests; and

• Calculating a public school’s or nonpublic school’s enrollment to determine the classification of an extracurricular, interscholastic athletic contest or competition.

• Requires the board of directors of school districts to allow students who reside within a school district and are enrolled in a nonpublic school to participate in an extracurricular, interscholastic athletic competition or contest, if the nonpublic school has not provided a team for the sport within the previous 2 school years (Sec. 2).

• Requires the board of directors of a school district to allow students who reside within a contiguous school district and are enrolled in a nonpublic school to participate in an extracurricular, interscholastic athletic competition or contest, if the nonpublic school has not provided a team for the sport within the previous 2 school years (Sec. 2).

• Requires parents or guardians of students seeking to participate in extracurricular, interscholastic athletic competitions or contests while not enrolled in public schools to pay any fees established for a student’s participation in such sport (Sec. 2).
