Title: Prohibits Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Initiatives at State Public Universities and Community Colleges
Vote to pass a bill that prohibits diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at state public universities and community colleges in South Carolina.
Defines “diversity, equity, and inclusion” or “DEI” as any preferences, mandates, policies, programs, or other activities implemented by a public entity that constitutes illegal discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin (Sec. 1).
Prohibits public entities, including state agencies, public universities, community colleges, and local governments, from giving preferential treatment in hiring or admission processes (Sec. 1).
Prohibits public entities from discriminating against any individual based on their race, color, religion, sex, or national origin (Sec. 1).
Prohibits government entities from having offices for the promotion of DEI (Sec. 1).
Prohibits government entities from requiring applicants to express their support for DEI efforts (Sec. 1).
Authorizes the Inspector General to investigate and address any violations of the provisions of this bill (Sec. 1).
Requires all public entities to report to the Department of Administration by August 1st of each year the total number and nature of complaints made in the previous year regarding violations of the provisions of this bill (Sec. 1).
Specifies that the provisions of this bill shall take effect upon approval by the Governor and first applies to the Fiscal Year 2025-2026 and School Year 2025-2026 (Sec. 4).
