Vote to amend and pass a bill that establishes the Internet Safety Advisory Council, with the goal to advance the safe use of media and technology by students and teachers in Virginia's public schools.

Highlights:

• Establishes the Internet Safety Advisory Council (Sec. 1).

• Authorizes the Superintendent to appoint members to the Council to advance the goal of safe use of media and technology by students and teachers (Sec. 1).

• Requires the membership of the Council to include at least 1 (Sec. 1):

• Teacher;

• Librarian;

• Representative of a parent-teacher organization who is a parent of a school-aged child;

• School administrator;

• Student; and

• An individual with expertise in Internet safety.

• Limits Council membership to 12 members (Sec. 1).

• Requires the Council to develop, review, and update guidelines on policies relating to Internet safety for schools in Virginia (Sec. 1).

• Requires the Council to develop and submit recommendations on instructional practices to the Board for the safe use of media and technology by students and teachers in public elementary and secondary schools in Virginia (Sec. 1).

• Requires the Council to develop, post, and maintain a webpage on the Department’s website with successful instructional practices used within and outside of Virginia to promote the safe use of media and technology by students and teachers (Sec. 1).

• Specifies that the effective date of this bill is July 1, 2026 (Sec. 2).
