Title: Prohibits the Expulsion of Students Due to Chronic Absenteeism
Vote to pass a bill that prohibits the expulsion of students due to chronic absenteeism in Georgia, effective July 1, 2025.
Prohibits the expulsion of students solely due to chronic absenteeism in Georgia public schools (Sec. 2).
Defines chronic absenteeism as students missing 10% or more of the school year (Sec. 4).
Authorizes school climate committees to address chronic absenteeism (Sec. 3).
Specifies that school climate committees shall be appointed by the chief judge of each county’s superior court (Sec. 3).
Requires school climate committees to meet no later than November 1, 2025, and at least twice annually thereafter (Sec. 3).
Requires school climate committees to develop protocols and policy recommendations for addressing chronic absenteeism by June 1, 2026 (Sec. 3).
Requires school climate committees to include a summary of possible consequences and penalties for failing to comply with compulsory attendance (Sec. 3).
Specifies that the provisions of this bill shall take effect on July 1, 2025 (Sec. 10).
