Vote to pass a bill that increases penalties and fines for employers found employing minors illegally or subjecting them to unsafe working conditions in Michigan.

Highlights:

• Prohibits minors from being employed in any occupation hazardous or injurious to the minor’s health or personal well-being or contrary to standards established under this bill (Sec. 3).

• Increases penalties and fines for employers found employing minors illegally or subjecting them to unsafe working conditions in Michigan to the following (Sec. 22):

• For the first violation a misdemeanor offense with a fine of $5,000, or 1 year prison term, or both;

• For the second violation a felony offense with a fine of $25,000, a 20-year prison term, or both; and

• For a third and subsequent offense a felony offense with a fine of $50,000, a 5-year prison term, or both.

• Increases penalties and fines for employers found employing minors who suffer death or great bodily harm while performing work to the following felony penalties (Sec. 22):

• For the first offense a 5-year prison sentence and fine of between $50,000 and $500,000;

• For a second offense a 10-year prison sentence and fine of between $50,000 and $500,000;

• For a third or subsequent offense a 20-year prison sentence and a fine of between $50,000 and $500,000.

• Specifies that the provisions of this bill shall take effect immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor (Sec. 22).
