Vote to amend and pass requires school districts to screen all students for difficulty in decoding language and other characteristics of dyslexia in Michigan.

Highlights:

• Requires Michigan’s department of education to select 3 or more tests, subject to reliability and validity of said assessments, to monitor progression of reading for usage by school districts and public schools (Sec. 1280).

• Requires literacy coaches in elementary schools to support teachers to use what was taught during professional development in all of the following (Sec. 1280):

• Administering, interpreting, and scoring reading assessments;

• Providing ideas to improve instruction used to improve word recognition;

• Using data diagnostically to adjust instruction and understand why a student may not be responsive to interventional instruction;
