Title: Authorizes Municipalities to Prioritize Healthy Food from Local Food Vendors
Vote to pass a bill that authorizes municipalities to prioritize healthy food from vendors who promote community health, worker well-being, local economies, racial equity, animal welfare, sustainability, and transparency, rather than prioritizing the lowest cost in New York.
Repeals barriers for municipalities to purchase healthy food from vendors who promote the following, rather than prioritizing the lowest cost food in New York, including, but not limited to (Sec. 1-2):
Community health;
Worker well-being;
Local economies;
Racial equity;
Animal welfare;
Sustainability; and
Transparency.
Defines “healthy foods” for the purposes of the bill as food that promotes health and well-being, comprised of namely the following, including (Sec. 1-2):
Whole grains;
Fresh;
Minimally-processed fruits and vegetables;
Essential fats (including nuts seeds and fish); and
Whole plant-based and lean proteins that decrease:
Sodium,
Added sugars,
Artificial additives, and
Saturated, hydrogenated, and trans fats.
Specifies that the provisions of this bill shall take effect immediately upon passage and approval by the governor (Sec. 3).
