Title: Establishes Requirements for Library Material in Public Schools and Libraries under the "Freedom to Read Act"
Vote to pass a bill that establishes requirements for library material in public schools and libraries under the "Freedom to Read Act" and protects public school and libraries staff members in New Jersey.
Establishes a definition for censorship as a means to block material that contains viewpoints contrary or offensive to one's own, but limited in the case where discretion is used for the appropriate development of a child (Sec. 3).
Establishes library curation guidelines for the Board of Education in New Jersey, including (Sec. 4):
Library material shall not be removed on the basis of origin, background, or views;
Libraries are centers for free expression and access to ideas; and
Librarians are specialists who are trained to curate a wide range of material that is developmentally appropriate for students
Establishes a policy for challenging and removing library material from a school library that consists in a liaison between librarians, parents, principal, superintendent, and Board of Education (Sec. 5).
