Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to concur with senate amendments and pass a bill that increases the amount of the state's merit-based scholarship program for high schoolers who attend college or get technical training within the state of Alaska.

Highlights:

• Establishes that recipients for the Alaska performance scholarship must meet the following requirements (Sec. 1). 

• Must receive one year of career and technical education; 

• Must receive three years of math; 

• Must receive four years of language arts; 

• Must receive three years of science; 

• Must receive four years of social studies;and

• Must receive 2 years of two years of a foreign language, an Alaska Native language, fine arts, or cultural heritage.

• Defines career cluster (Sec. 4). 

• Specifies the scholarship award level as $7000, $5250, and $3500, (Sec. 5). 

• Specifies that a student eligibility for scholarship is extended by one semester for each semester the student is enrolled part time in good academic standing at a qualified university or college (Sec. 8). 

• Establishes a tax credit for contributions of cash or equipment accepted for the operation of a nonprofit educational resource center that supports academic achievement in grades nine through 12 by coordinating curricula and statewide competition in the subject areas of economics, science, social science, literature, music, art, mathematics, writing, speech, and interview skills and by providing student scholarships (Sec. 11).
